warning: this is gonna be dorky...

as i mentioned a while ago, i've been buying a lot of comics over the last while, starting last summer (i blame disposable income and a semi-lucrative commission-based sales job). until a few years ago, my target collection had revolved around superman: i aimed to own every superman comic published after crisis on infinite earths. however, as that ( Read more... )

superman, u.s., canada, dc, geekery, ebay, comics, pics

Don't feel bad. If it makes you feel less geekier.... I just got my sketchbook back with a Joe Simon original of Captain America in it. I clutched my book the entire way back from the City like it had the instructions for the cure for cancer in it.

well that's pretty cool. i still haven't been to a con, although it's certainly something i'm interested in doing at least once, just for the experience.

I cheated to get the Joe Simon. He's apparently stopped doing a lot of drawings and sketches, especially at cons. I lent it to my uncle who's been working with Simon since he started remastering comic art for The Comicbook Makers (Joe Simon's version of all the backstories about comic history in America).

I stopped buying comics when wes was born due to baby expenses and it still bums me out every now and again. I only have one long box here in Canada and the rest are at my mother's house in the states. We don't have the space to store any here which kind of blows. The only CD I ever collected was Animal Man and Doom Patrol (because Grant Morrison is god). If you didn't have them already I'd probably just give them to you next time I went down to the states and picked them up.

One of these years I'm going to get a subscription to something for christmas. I mostly collected Marvel and Vertigo. I'd suggest once you get all this stuff that you move to Vertigo. That is some messed up storytelling.

i've found that i generally tend to enjoy the more straightforward superhero comics, though i do indeed enjoy some grant morrisson. i'm not sure how heavily i'll ever get into vertigo. it'll depend on how much i like animal man, doom patrol, and swamp thing (the three titles that started as dc, and continued as vertigo, so i counted them towards my target collection).

even if i do decide to get into it, i think i've decided that anything after this is done will just be trade paperbacks rather than single issues.

I kind of prefer the off the wall comics a bit more, although I grew up on X-everything and probably have everything published with an X in the title from 84 - 2000. I really just miss new comic day. I loved the ritual of going up to the comic shop every week and seeing what came out. I should get some amazon gift certs and buy myself some trades. That's a good idea.

you can probably get trades on ebay or at your local store for less than it costs to buy them new on amazon.

and i love new comic day. i'm there every week, rifling through all the colourful new covers, grabbing almost everything with "DC" on it. and conversing with my fellow dorks on topics that only we can converse about.

i would like to see the extras, sure!
and birds of prey and the like are not that popular first run. they sell less, printed in smaller runs, and cherished by those who purchase them originally so they are harder to get.

i was tracking down the last ish of shogun warriors that i needed #14 for 8 years. no one read it nor wanted it and it is worthless but so hard to find. another example of how odd the collector market can be.

unless it is a big mainstream character(spidey, superman etc) you can run into all sorts of problems.

that is part of the fun

hmmm, i guess that makes some sense. but it doesn't explain why it always seems to be the female character-based comics that fetch such high prices. are they always printed in low runs or something?

and i can email you the list if you want. what's your email address?

put something in the subject so i know its not junkmail please.

female characters, outside of good girl stuff, do not attract many readers. typically
