I once watched a Russian documentary about Richter (the title of which escapes me), but I've not (as far as I know) seen "Richter the Enigma."
Just as I was lamenting the dearth of commendable contemporary pianists, Kissin won me (back) over. He played all five Beethoven concerti in Chicago last month, astoundingly (well), especially the first three. Too bad the recordings of the past few years have been so suboptimal.
kissin's playing has always annoyed me but, i'm always curious to see what pianists turn into. richter said of him "he's knowledgable and plays well but, he never throws himself headlong into the sea. perhaps he'll never do so." i tend to share that opinion. although, if he's gotten over himself, i'm sure his playing has improved. wilhelm kempff has been a long time favorite of mine with beethoven. mikhail pletnev (sic)? is worth looking into so far as the "contemporary" pianists go. argerich also has her moments i think but, i can only take her in small doses anymore.
