That Nasty-Ass Thanksgiving Banquet

Nov 24, 2013 14:10

I was watching the so-called "Food Network Live" event this morning, only to find out that it wasn't "live" but had been pre-taped the day before. The special is usually entertaining to watch because it's one of the few times you get to see some of these food experts interacting in the same room in real time. This year's main four were especially ( Read more... )

Hah! I'm glad someone else avoids Thanksgiving food, too! Though I confess to liking textureless mashed potato paste and flavorless dinner rolls, I think turkey tastes like cardboard (though I find chicken to be *slimy* cardboard).

I have fundamentally "wrong" taste in food--not liking most traditional "American" or adventurous "ethnic" foods, and I really like that I can just have what I want on Thanksgiving.

Enjoy your iconoclastic feast on Thursday!

Some part of it was live, because all over the internet you can see headlines "Giada DeLaurentiis slices her finger in live broadcast". Guess you turned it off before that excitement?

Yesterday it was live. The recording of it was run today.

I hadn't known that it was on yesterday, so I didn't see it when it was "live."

Lisa is planning on cooking a duck rather than a turkey. Duck tastes better, and we have learned that one duck serves the two of us quite nicely. We can eat mushrooms, but Lisa is allergic to yellow food dye, so if she wants stuffing, she has to make it mostly from scratch and will be making one with risotto and wild rice. But cranberry sauce, string beans, etc.? We don't like them either, so we don't have them. Corn, yes. Pumpkin pie we like.

Mind you, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, we're actually going to John Ascuaga's Nugget for Thanksgiving because their feast sounds delicious and we'll just avoid the pieces we don't like. And we can avoid the turkey there as well. We'll just have our at-home feast on Black Friday and be thankful we're not out shopping.

My mother always made stuffing from scratch with (her homemade) bread. There was no dye in her bread. Ever. I never saw dye in stuffing till that Stove Top stuff came out.

Still, I like your plans. I love duck, and I love a good buffet. :-)

If you like pie, but not the crust, try making a crust out of ground almonds, splenda, and butter. Goes with most types of pie fillings.

And stuffing can be a meal. I add sausage and apples to mine. Tastes great reheated for breakfast. Of course, I make my own from scratch, not that nasty stuff in the grocery store.

Mom's stuffing contained the stuff from the "innards" packet except the neck, so there was some protein in it, but not as much protein as bread.

My mother always made her own stuffing. I don't consider the pre-done store stuff to be "real."
