I've just been to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre

I'll write more about it later tonight when I've had a chance to collect my thoughts on it. I found it to be a very moving experience.

I can't *do* Holocaust stuff.
I *know* what humanity is capable of, it frightens and sickens me. How can you de-humanise them so completely? What would I do? I like to think of myself as a good person but I am a follower not a leader and I don't ever want to know if I would turn my back on a whole section of society.
I've also always been aware that the UK and Germany are so alike, have so much in common, there but for the grace of god go we. We did it in York.

York was a bit over 800 years ago. I don't think you can saw "we did it" there.

I guess it's more immediate for me; yes, it was brutal, unhuman, terrifying. But it's also family history (one member of the family that was still in Europe got out, I believe the rest went to Treblinka or Maidenek and died).

It was...difficult. And sobering. But the part that I wept the most at was the wall of the Righteous Among Nations, those who did NOT stand idly by. (And the words of Denmark, 1943 were staying in my head the entire time.)

For what it's worth, I don't believe you would turn your back on people, if push came to shove.
