From an article on being prepared for winter driving in today's Montreal Gazette:

It is also beneficial to start driving the car as soon as it has idled for 45 seconds to a minute. Working the engine warms it up faster, which means the defroster will have the windows fog-free that much sooner.Dude, are you saying that people in Montreal should ( Read more... )

To start with, you drive around with your windows open. Chilly, but effective.

We really find that's the best way to keep your sanity in a Monday morning Boston commute -- out of sight, out of mind.

In fact, I've seen some people try to fog 'em up even more with hot coffee inside a cold car.

I find that fogging up the inside of the faceshield on my motorcycle helmet also helps hide the look of sheer terror on my face while motorcycle-commuting in Boston traffic.

Hee! Being able to see out the windows will just distract you from your phone call, anyway.

The Prius has an electric heater it will turn on in defog mode, to start defogging immediately, along with the usual heated rear windows and new-to-me heated side mirrors. And of course it can work the engine by charging the traction battery. Best window defogging I've experienced, though winter is just getting started so I haven't gotten to try it too many times yet. I haven't had a serious cold morning start yet, either, but the 21 kilowatts of starter power make starting pretty non-eventful.

I love the electrically-heated windscreen on my Escort. No more fumbling out of the village first thing as the carefully-scraped screen ices up again...

My car takes sometimes 5-10 miles to warm up to "merely warm" air coming out of the vents, it takes a long time to warm up 700 lbs of engine and transmission.

Cold weather is one time I do miss my old Neon, two blocks was enough to have hot air.

My father used to drive with the windows FREEZED!
(Now he has a garage, so he doesn't have to any more)
