Yeah, my head knows that the standings are not critical. It's just my ego that says that I should be able to do better than the bottom fifth of the racers. I will be pleased to complete the race, no matter what the time, but I will try very hard to be able to jog it all the way, and would very much like to be able to do closer to 8-minute miles than 10-minute miles (last year's second-place runner was my age this year, and he did the 4 miles in 23:08 - under 6 minutes/mile!). 8 minutes/mile or thereabouts puts me in the middle of the pack.
