would the excuse, "Because you can afford it" be better than "Because you're rich?"

No, that's almost an insult too! I don't remember what my friend said might have been "because you can afford it" or "because you're rich". Who says I want to buy it? It's an insult to me if I enter a store with some people and I look at a TV. The moderately priced TV. But these people instead try to steer me to the higher-priced TV. They know that I can "afford" it, thinking that's what I want. Some people don't understand why I am a huge pennypincher. Rather, I don't like it when they define my behavior on the basis of my financial stablility. That in some way, I am "better" than them. Surely, I am not and I don't see it that way at all ( ... )

Well, it sounds like your dad is being well-taken care of by the company, and that's really awesome. Some places just let people go and completely cut them off, and eeh yeah. Your dad sounds very well-respected and 'highly-coveted' in the job world, though. I wouldn't worry too badly. :)
