should a person's natural instincts define what they believe
or should a person's beliefs decide how they live?

does any one else think about this?

sounds like a more complex way to debate nurture vs. nature.

looking forward to Ian's lengthy response?

man i wish people wanted to talk like this more often

Personally I think our "instincts" (say our responses towards eating, mating, parenting, fighting) are so controlled and effected by our cognitive processing and our exeriences/observations that we really don't have any True instincts...as humans, birds just gotta follow the first one to make a move

so that would mean what we belief is going to define our instincts
and that definitely determines/effects/reflects on how we live...right?

I want to hear what you have to say about it

i agree that most "intstincs" are learned through life. and i also think that life expiriences define who we are today. but, people arent always happy with who they have become which leads them, i think, to subscribe to another set of beliefs that came from some one elses life expiriences. so you change and change forever to be closer to what you think is a better way to live, a destination that will never be reached.
i dont see the point of it.
i am starting to think that if i could tune into my own needs and wants and happiness and natural instinct, i have everything i need to lead the kind of life i want programmed into my mind already.
i wish that people talked about these things more too, then my thoughts wouldnt be so scrambled

the problem is that no one individual can have their own unique instincts, if true instincts in humans existed, because we are part of a species we inherit them...our species is highly dependent
like a wolf's survival is dependent on being in a group, a pack

and no matter which way a person goes about it everyone is looking for happiness and a better way
I mean maybe people arnt so unhappy with who they've become but with what the world around them is becomming and how they contribute to it
sometimes I think about the way we thought when we were younger, and how we should try to tune into that

we definitely could use less negativity in the world, more people who act possitively for something instead of always fighting against something

I laughed out loud at Ians (hypothetical) example myself... then I remebered my own romantic situation isn't exactly blooming either. I like when Ian talks about trying to impregnate someone.

I was going to write it as "have sex with", but I liked the somewhat awkwardly phrased version better.

What you're saying is right on. I also think that it matches up with what I was saying about not wanting to change and settling in. Here's why: you want to settle in to [never changing], since if you stopped doing that, you'd change and start doing the same thing all the time. So what I said before applies to you when we move up a level, so to speak. But this is just an example of the technical philosophy stuff I usually do ( ... )
