“When are you gonna move in?” Charlie asked and sat down in the middle of
the living room floor.

“What?” Don asked. He was carrying moving boxes from the bedroom.
“When are you moving in with Martin?”
“Sometime next week probably, if I can get people to help with the packing
and all that.”
“Did you want to take some furniture here? If you want-”
“No, I don’t need anything.” Don slammed another box to the floor next to
Charlie. Alan’s apartment was almost as it had been when the resident
was still there. Nothing had been touched yet. “You?”

“No, the house is packed already.” Charlie examined the cardboard boxes.
“Look at these.”

“What about them?”
“They’re the same boxes dad took from the garage when he moved here. He
hasn’t even opened them.”
“They were all full of old junk.” Don shrugged. “What did Mr. Simmons say
about the apartment?”
“The same thing he said in the reading of the will.”
“He kept blabbing law terms for two hours. Did you understand any of it?”
“Dad’s estate was divided equally between us, excluding some donations he
had listed in the codicil.”
“I got that part.”
“So, we can take what we want and sell the rest. Since you’re moving in with
Martin, you probably don’t want to keep this place.”
“Yeah. Did he recommend anyone to sell it?”
“Don, we’re still going through the process, we’re not in a hurry.”
“Right.”
“You don’t like to be here, do you?” Charlie asked.
“It just feels weird.”
“Knowing that this place is just like it was, but daddy not coming back. I know
what you mean.”
“So….” Don glanced around the room looking for a distraction. “I want his
golf clubs.”
“You didn’t think I would fight for those…..”
“Nope.” Don grinned and went back to the bedroom. When he came back five
minutes later Charlie was reading a tall pile of papers.

“What are those?”
“Some papers I found in that closed box.
“Anything interesting?”
“No.” Charlie looked up and turned red. “Just some of his old papers from city
planning meetings.”
“Okay…” Don went back to the bedroom to get rest of the boxes. From the corner
of his eye he saw Charlie tearing few pages from the pile, folding them and put-
ting them to his pocket.  “This is the last one.” He brought one more cardboard
box the living room. “I have no idea why he didn’t open them.”

“They were growing mold in the garage for years. Apparently it wasn’t that impor-
tant.” Charlie shrugged.

“Guess not.”
