I'm not sure about Snape. I've always hated him, so when I found out he really was a Death Eater I was overjoyed because I finally got a valid reason to hate him. But then I go back and re-read Spinner's End, and part of the Vow was that he'd have to kill Dumbledore if Draco didn't, and well, Draco didn't.
I still believe that Snape is much more loyal to the Dark Side, but I agree about not having complete loyalty to either. He's done his fair share for the Light, and I don't think he'd have killed Dumbledore if he hadn't taken the Vow.
I'm still not completely sure how I feel about him now, but it's something like that. :)
Snape is so deliciously complicated! Snape became my favorite after that long post GoF period. I loved his wicked comments and his reactions to idiots like Lockhart.
I think he never really felt ties to anyone, but Narcissia was so sad and pleaded so much, and for some inexplicable reason he felt a connection with Malfoy. Maybe Malfoy was the kind of Slytherin Snape always wanted to be. Popular. Dunno.
It's wierd. Even after this, Snape remins my favorite, and Dumbledore is still one of my favorites too. If only my favorite was just Harry and I could just think like him! Then I would not be so bothered!
I guess we wont know about Snape untill the end. ;D

I'd like to think that what happened doesn't change what once was. *gets nostalgic*

Talk about preferring illusion to despair.
