So what makes it so good? Mayhap I should use that as a reason to finally play the game (not that I've avoided it, it's just... never happened).

Axis & Allies anniversary adds in Italy as a playable power - it really helps even the field between the Axis & Allies (before it was Germany & Japan vs US, UK & USSR and allies would win unless they were DUMB)

Adding Italy as a playable power didn't balance it - previously, Italy was a German province at the beginning of the game.

Adding bonus munnies for certain national goals make an Axis win genuinely feasible where it wasn't before, because they couldn't expand and the Allies could. It means that the Axis have ways to increase their IP without increasing their territory significantly.

Want. Game.

Holy crap, it's $100? O_o Are the bits as nice as the 40th Anniversary Risk edition? Also, will they release a "regular" version w/ the game updates?

I don't think they're doing a "regular" version. The bits are the standard plastic bits (with some new sculpts).

*shrug* I'd still totally get it if I had the $$ to spare.

The updated basic version which comes in August will incorporate some of the upgrades (rules upgrades specifically) but not include Italy.
