"Only Sith thnk in absolutes.."

In Revenge of the Sith, Obi Wan says "Only Sith deal in absolutes" but that isn't quite true. The Jedi Order also deal in absolutes, and that's part of their problem. The Jedi are far from perfect, because they are indoctrinated as babies to follow the Code, which takes a lot of their freewill away, and are isolated from people who are different ( Read more... )

One thing that I think is worth noting is that Obi-Wan's statement is, in itself an absolute.

That said, I always find the Vader/Luke story and relationship so poignant. How Luke was...one could say the only person who loved Anakin/Vader, besides Anakin's own mother. I wouldn't go there, as I believe Padme and Obi-Wan did love Anakin. But the thing with Luke is that he loved Anakin when there was nothing to love, when the man he knew was a monster with iron fist who killed thousands, tortured Leia and Han, maimed him...

That reminds me, have you read attanagra's essay on how and when Vader truly gave way to Anakin again? It's brilliant!

Also brilliant, have you ever seen this article?

Exactly. That's why I've always found that line a little unintentionally amusing--if Obi-Wan's statement is true, he's basically proclaiming himself a Sith right along with Anakin. Maybe instead he should have said, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes...from a certain point of view!" :p

I always thought that was a funny, total lack of self-awareness statement ;).

I love your last paragraph :) All these years of being a Star Wars fan and I never really looked at their relationship that way!

Some good points there, thanks. I think there were benefits from Luke *not* having been in the Jedi Order - he had learnt to see the grey in life.
