Lewis returned two days later. Ed was just coming in when he saw a familiar Ford pull up.
He opened the passenger door and bent down. "Hey Lou, Sean," he greeted the two men inside.
Lewis' boyfriend grinned back. "Hey, Ed." He twisted around and pulled Lewis' duffle bag from the backseat.
Lewis slowly got out of the car. When he was standing, obviously still not quite alright, Ed bent back down.
"We'll take good care of him," he promised and grabbed the duffle bag Sean was holding out.
"You better." The man looked at Lewis and frowned. "I don't even know why he insists on coming in. He can't even sleep properly yet."
Lewis groaned. "I'm not an invalid."
Ed winked at Sean conspiratorially and slammed the car door closed. "No, I know. You could take down a guy right now." He shouldered the duffle bag and watched as Lewis and Sean said goodbye through the car window.
When Lewis turned again and the car pulled away, he admitted, "Maybe not quite."
"Don't worry. The boss will find something for you to do."
Inside, the team was already getting ready for the morning meeting.
"Hey," Spike greeted them from where he was twirling in his chair. He looked at Lewis with surprise. "What are you doing here?"
Greg looked up from his files and snorted. "My guess is Sean drove him insane."
Lewis smiled and shrugged, admitting it.
"Yeah?" Jules asked, grinning. "Remember what you told me once? Chill and indulge him because he's just worried? Weren't those your words?"
"Now, come on. That was-" Lewis started, but broke off when Jules looked at him expectantly. He raised his hands in defense and sat down, one hand quickly going to his ribs at the movement.
"Do as I say, not as I do?" Wordy threw in and sat down in his chair. Ed sat down next to him, leaning forward. His sly, broad grin made Lewis squirm.
"Seriously, though," Greg said and looked up. "If you give clever advice, maybe you should listen to yourself."
Sam chose that moment to come in. "What's going on? Hey, Lou," he said. "You're in?"
Jules nodded. "His boyfriend's driving him insane, worrying and hovering." Her words were meant to dig at Sam's behavior when she had gotten shot, but the look on his face told her that maybe he hadn't heard that part. Sam looked shocked. Only then did Jules realize what she had given away. She looked Lewis helplessly, then at Greg.
Lewis had his lips pressed together. The rest of the team looked grim, too. Sam had been with them for a while now, but that particular topic hadn't come up yet.
"Sam, with me for a moment," Greg said then and walked outside, waiting for Sam to catch up.
"Sarge?" Sam asked, eyes wide.
"Don't make me regret hiring you," Greg simply said and patted Sam's shoulder before passing by him on his way back into the briefing room.
