I try and read you in your shifting eyes #5

Greg wasn't sure what he was trying to accomplish when he asked Sam outside. Either Sam was the man Greg had thought he was, or they would have a problem.

"You don't have to worry about me," Sam said quietly before Greg entered the briefing room again. "I'm just not used to people being so open about it."

"I know." Greg smiled, knowing his expression would signal to the team that everything was alright. "I'm sorry I reacted so quickly. It's just that… we've had trouble before you. And I don't want anything like that happening on my team ever again." He looked at Sam, hoping he got the message across. "We're tight-knit. I worry." Through the glass doors, he saw Spike lean across the empty seat next to Lewis and carefully run a hand over his bruised ribs. "Maybe especially right now."

"It wasn't your fault," Sam said, even if he knew that everyone else had already said the same words to Greg.

"I know. Doesn't mean I can't feel guilty for it." Greg shrugged and with a gesture, invited Sam back inside. "Let's get down to work," he told the room at large, clapping his hands.

Lewis grinned when Sam demonstratively sat down next to him.

"Awww, you should've told me!" he said, jokingly.

Sam caught the look the others gave him, something like relief and appreciation. He wondered briefly why they had thought he wouldn't accept this. He guessed that, with him coming straight from the military, they had to be worried. He knew enough people who wouldn't be so accepting. Spike tilted his head and said something to Ed, who nodded. It was then that Sam realized he had one chance with this team, and had he reacted badly, he would have had to kiss his position goodbye.

He started telling the team the day's schedule and how they would divide positions if they got called in to back up Team Two. Next to him, Lewis asked Greg for something to do while the others were off, training.

"You're going to help me do some paperwork," Greg told him. "And nothing more."

When Greg declared the briefing over, everyone got up to get to the training facility. Sam hesitated when he stood, thinking that maybe he should say something.

"Hey," Lewis said when everyone else had filed out. He smiled. "They're a bit…" he broke off and shrugged, giving Sam a look that said 'what can you do'.

"Protective," Sam filled in and nodded. "It's alright. They should be."

Lewis got up. "We're cool, though, right?"

Sam grinned and nodded. "You know we are."

"It just didn't come up," Lewis said. "I mean, I wasn't worried or anything. I think you should know that."

"Thanks." Sam looked over Lewis' shoulder and saw Greg waiting. He stepped past Lewis and turned in the doorway. "Don't strain yourself, pushing around paper," he joked, keeping his tone light.

Lewis waved him off with a laugh. Yeah, they were alright.
