I think affirmative action is bullshit. Plain and simple. It's kind of cool, though, if you're white because we've managed to create a form of racism that black people will accept. We talked about this a little bit (1 or 2 classes) in my Moral and Contemporary Issues class.

Our book is Morality and Moral Controversies by John Arthur. The two essays that we looked at in class that adressed the problem in particular were James Rachels' "Reverse Discrimination" and Charles Murray's "Affirmative Racism". Rachels taught at UAB until this year, he died of cancer or some shit in the fall.

I hope all of that can help, because I know I'd enjoy some help from you if you had it to give on one of my papers.

Thanks man,

I think that wil lhelp me a lot. I'm struggling to find worth while sources; so, if I can find a copy of that book, I will definitely be in business.

Also if you ever needed help I'd be more than happy to give what I could. Thanks for responding. Apparently you are the only person that goes to this site, or you the only person that goes that is literate.

If you don't have to have your sources and paper done beore this weekend, and you're coming home, I have that book, so you could use it. If you're not coming home, then you could probably find either essay online for free since most philosophers just enjoy being read.

James Rachels's son Stuart Rachels was one of my professors at UA. I've been to James Rachels's house. Boy, that's interesting huh?

I do not have an accountable source, but I hate affirmative action especially because it makes it nearly impossible for a white, middle-class American to recieve any kind of scholarship money. A guy in my Physics lab said he had a 3.8 highschool GPA and scored a 30 on the ACT, but recieved no financial aid from Auburn University.

I had a 4.03, and a 32 ACT and I didn't get shit from Alabama, which is an easier school to get money from. Incidentally, I do think it's because I'm a white male.

Affirmative Action is bullshit for several reasons. First, I don't believe that the government has an "interest" in promoting "equality". (Affirmative Action doesn't promote "equality" anyway, it promotes an unfair advantage based on race, but I'm granting the equality thing for the sake of argument.) Second, the government has no place dictating how folks use their property unless rights are being violated. And nobody has a right to work or live wherever they want. Third, it's not constitutional. Attempts to justify that kind of stuff are inevitably aimed at Congress' commerce clause powers, the reasoning being that since Congress has the right to regulate commerce "among the several states" this extends by implication to the authority to influence (or dictate) the hiring practices of private businesses. Anyone who has read the Constitution would see that this is a flagrant, tyrannical inflation of federal power.

I disagree with affirmative action for several reasons. I'll give you the main and, to me, the most blatent one. I am also going to focus on the black/white issue because that is the main issue most people focus on ( ... )

And here we are in the 21st century and we're screwing over not only the next generation of black Americans who have these great opportunities, but every other American in the process. Because when you say this kid has to work this hard to make it into this school because he's white, but this kid only has to work half as hard to make it because he is black, you are not only saying "screw the white kid who worked hard, he's white so he doesn't deserve to get it as much as someone of another color who isn't half as prepared" and leaving that white kid nothing for his hard work, you are also short changing the black kid. Because that black kid didn't have to work so hard to get through high school and into a good college, but once he gets into college, there are no separate classes for the black and white kids, because that would be racist, right? So now you have this kid who wasn't nearly as adequately prepared to be in such a tough university struggling to make it through with both white kids and other minority students who have ( ... )

People will argue that black kids have worse public schools and less opportunities to advance, and that might have been a valid argument in the ‘80s, but now, there are equal opportunities for black and white parents to live in better neighborhoods and work harder to have better schools. It's not a while child's fault that this black child's parents were too stupid to realize they didn't need to breed period and definitely didn't need to expose a baby to a violent ghetto with no school system. That's not being racist, that's speaking the god damn truth. And still, if that is the problem, then the money for Affirmative Action should go into improving impoverished schools (better teachers, new equipment, more classes, more after school activities), giving the minority children a better chance at being accepted into school and actually being able to DO the college course work. It’s like slapping a band-aid on a severed limb.
