How does a person with very little savings build a home large enough for a medium sized family without acquiring debt and remain true to some minimal green standards?     Shipping containers ( Read more... )

That's a really cool idea. How much do the containers cost?

Also, have you looked at earthbag building, or earthships?

The containers cost anywhere from 500 to 4000 a piece. I'm hoping because we live in a state that has a lot of shipyards, I'll be able to get them cheap. I've got a couple of formal requests for bids out right now, but we are not going to buy the containers till we get the plans drafted and permits approved.

I have looked at both earthbag buildings and earthships. If we can not get the permits for the container dwelling, and we will look more seriously at those options. These container dwellings are sturdy and virtually non-destructable. I'm hoping there are no issues with permits.
