Lonely Planet guides have kept me and tooticky amused for years. She got me the Japan one for Christmas, and the Tassie one has proved very handy over the last few years. (You know that a hostel is going to be... interesting... when even the Lonely Planet reviewers describe it as "spartan".)

Keep writing. The excerpts from the group e-mail are great. :)
