I've been reading more and more about "hypermiling" - trying to get the most gas mileage out of your car. I know gas is expensive, but I'm not willing to risk my safety or the safety of my kids. Not to mention my comfort

I heard that if you're on the highway, you should put the AC on because having your windows open slows you down more. Some of the things those hypermilers do are insane. I heard they tailgate trucks and SHUT THE ENGINE OFF to get carried along by the truck. Sure, I'll risk my life to save a few bucks! I am trying to slow down, though, and be less aggressive (wish me luck), because I've heard that helps.

I've discovered that if I run the A/C in my car and set it to recirculate the air, I can shut the A/C off once I get on the highway and it actually gets frigid. I don't know if this is specific to my car or not, because it doesn't get as cold in Brian's Civic.
Personally, I'm uncomfortable driving slower than the speed of traffic. I don't care about how my speed effects my gas mileage. I'd rather continue to put gas in the car than get side-swiped by a car that ultimately results in getting hit by one of those tanker trucks and therefore totally the car.
I'm also uncomfortable setting the cruise control because I feel like I've lost control of the vehicle and I'm distracted by setting it up.

You can save 10-20 gallons of gas a year by getting one of those locking gas caps. Apparently they seal better. And you lose that hassle of taking your car out and parking it somewhere only to return and find that someone siphoned your gas tank. They're $10 at auto-zone.
I love the cruise control for highway driving. Otherwise I tend to go too fast (ie, with the flow of traffic, haha). But I am not willing to risk speeding because the cops are C R A Z Y in DE.

I don't think the a/c trick would work for me - I do no highway driving. My commute is strictly residential roads.
