A neighbor stopped by to chat last night while I was watering two of my tomato plants (the other wasn't as dry and got watered this morning*)... First she said how nice they looked ( Read more... )

Tomatoes will split because of inconsistant watering. If you let them get too dry and then try to compensate, the tomatoes grow too fast for their skins and the skins split. (I think you knew that.)

I water every day unless it's raining. During really hot spells I will sometimes water twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. And then if we don't get enough rain, I'll still water. If we start getting too much rain, I make sure the pots the tomatoes are in can drain easily by pulling off the water catch part on the bottom or dumping it regularly.
You should water when the top of the soil looks dry. If you stick your finger in the soil to about 1 inch and it feels dry, you should water. Avoid watering midday, too much of it will evaporate before it gets to the roots.

I thought you didn't like tomatoes or were allergic?

It showed up as an allergy on the blood test and I noticed a bit of extra acid reflux when I ate them again, but that's it. So last year I went on a BLT binge (turkey bacon ( ... )

Blossom end rot can be cured with lime. Just sprinkle it on the soil once and water normally. It will absorb into the soil.

You saw the link over on nosebeepbears LJ, I recommend buying from them. I have had excellent luck with their products. In addition to the Sungold Cherry tomatoes, These are the large tomatoes I'm growing this year and they are doing great.

FWIW, I have never seen any retail nursery or store selling Sungolds.

it depends on what causes the blossom end rot and you have to test the soil to really know what that is.
I changed some things and it hasn't returned. (I mulched... and am watering more deeply when I water - instead of a little in the AM and a little in the PM.)

I bought these seeds at a regular store, but I do this again I'll choose more carefully. Splitting a pack or two with Jo will help - I don't want to place an order by myself for as little as I'm going to be planting.
