Do you watch a movie that comes out after you've read the book?  Do you read the book after you've seen the movie?  Is the book always better?

The books are almost always better than the movies (IF the movie was done from the book rather than a book being put out as a novelization of the movie). This is not universal, however. I can remember two specific exceptions in my own life … recognizing, of course, that we’re speaking of whether I perceived the movie as better, because who am I that anybody would accept a blanket judgment from me?

The first was “The Deep”, clear back in 1977, done from Peter Benchley’s book. I saw the movie first, read the book later, and found them to be significantly dissimilar in several ways. Characters were changed, events were rearranged, and the ending was substantially different. I found that the changes made the movie more entertaining, if not necessarily better than the book.

The second (more recent, but still “back in the old days” as far as kids now are concerned) was “The Firm” in 1993. I don’t actually remember whether I read the book first or saw the movie first; I think it was the book, but can’t swear to it. What I can absolutely ( ... )
