Thank you for this! I'm trying to teach myself graphic manipulation and I'm definitely going to be counting on tutorials in the future. This is awesome. I'm such a n00b and have no idea what Gimp is, lol, but I'm assuming these steps are applicable in Photoshop as well. Thank you!

Great icon btw!

*hugs*

Thank you! I'm glad this seems interesting!

I learned everything I know by experimenting and using tutorials, but only as suggestions. My advice is to avoid the tutorials that tell you the exact values you should use, and stick to the ones that tell you how to use a tool.

Gimp is an open source photo-editing program that's pretty damn awesome and I think it's more than enough for everyone who doesn't make a living from graphics. All of the steps are applicable to PS, since they're pretty generic. What you don't have to do is make new layers from what is visible in your layer palette, just select Curves/Levels/etc as an adjustment layer.

Man, cropping people out is my least fave part of photoshopping anything at all, and after a while I just deal with it being half-assed/not-so-great and live with it. I should probably try other tools than just an eraser or the magnetic piece.

It's only for super patient people.

This is my first tutorial ever, so I'm really happy you found it useful. :)

Oh no! GIMP! *runs* *hides*

Uh, JK. I didn't even know it was possible to lighten a cap that much. Hmm, it def SOUNDS possible. I'll have to try this with my woobie!Dean icon from 'Sam, Interrupted' that is too dark to use ATM. Thanks!

It's possible, but it really depends on the cap. But you'll never know until you try! :)
