It seems that, over the past few years, livejournal has become the trusted keeper of semi-personal life updates for most of my friends. I guess one of the big social networking sites had to win eventually, for the same reasons that ebay continues to rule online auctions. After starting this topic, I began thinking about ways to have my cake (conveniently linking my friends' personal profiles / weblogs) and eat it too (doing so without handing control to a corporation). The answer I kept coming up with was to design a network protocol for exchanging profiles and weblogs between internet servers. If there was a common protocol for doing this stuff, any service that supported the protocol could intermix its own users with users from someplace else. For example, I could store my personal information on thaemos' web server, and all you folks could still link to me as if I was a livejournal user ( ... )
