Only one good thing came out of reading The Bean Trees. I found this quote:

There is no point in treating a depressed person as though she were just feeling sad, saying, There now, hang on, you'll get over it. Sadness is more or less like a head cold -- with patience, it passes. Depression is like cancer.

It hurts so much to see someone you love with cancer. You see them losing themselves and dying before your very eyes. Depression causes the same thing, death. Death of your soul. It prevents it from shining. Depression and cancer walk hand and hand in taking away those I love most...
