I never considered Dark Crystal a failure - but I don't imagine it had a HUGE box office ;>. OTOH, I don't figure it has to have a big box office to be a success - Snow White & Gone With The Wind are two "classics" that didn't do so well at the box office initially ;>. Wizard of Oz wasn't a big either at first.
I suspect my favorite "failure" is Hudson Hawk It's an absolute hoot - has a great cast - and apparently just isn't "funny" enough for most folks. I love caper movies and this is the comedic/outlandish side of that genre. I mean if one ever liked the Flint movies (and yes, I do), then this should fit right in! Bruce Willis, Danny Aiello & Andie MacDowell as the good guys - James Coburn and Sandra Bernheardt as the villains - really, how can one lose? For some reasons I never quite got, the goths I hung out with in the mid-90's LOVED this movie - perhaps it was the High Irony - but they would make it a regular "get together and watch every few months" event :>.
Decompression space is always good. It takes a while at a con before I psych myself into social mode, and after some of that I need quiet time.
Dark Crystal had one of those terrible "parody of eucatastrophe" endings in which the unprepared, unmediated, unexpected, and incomprehensible resurrection of the dead character is the happy ending. Blech.
As I said, the DARK CRYSTAL was pretty good right up until then. But even without that ending, the film would have lacked broad appeal. I think movies work better if there is some grounding in the familiar, especially through a character (such as Sarah in LABYRINTH).
I was lucky, I guess. They only put me on one program item: the Sunday services. This meant that I could take the con at my own pace. Very relaxing!

It's totally worth another look - it makes a great "convention" movie too!
