This heart, some fraction of me (Carson/Hughes. Missing Scene S2E2)

Sep 27, 2011 22:36

ellie987 asked for a sequel to my last Carson/Hughes fic, but since that turned out to be as AU as I thought it would, this isn't strictly a sequel. It's set just after Lady Mary has left Carson's room and Mrs. Hughes has stayed.

My first draft was very angst-ridden, but then I spent hours cooking and listening to the pilot for the BBC radio programme ( Read more... )

This is totally canon. *nods*

"It's not the first time you've been in my bed."

"Side-by-side it is."

I actually blushed at this! Really lovely story :)

So glad to hear I could make you blush! The main stumbling block to my trying my hand at some more mature C/H fic is the language -- I can't use the same sort of terminology I would for Adama/Roslin. Slowly I'll make my way there; I think it would need to be much more implied than explicit.

Yeah I don't think Mr. Carson or Mrs. Hughes would say Frak ;)
I have one or two ideas floating around in my head for this show and this is probably the main thing stopping me.

I think it would need to be much more implied than explicit.
Ooh good point! Everything about these two (actually every ship in this show) is about what isn't said. Or at least that's what I love about it :)

Now I'm trying to imagine "Frak" being said with a Scottish accent. The mind boggles.

Argh! I love this! And I'm so glad I chose to write the end of the other scene, because I'd have looked like a right wally if I'd tried to do as well as this!

Well, after reading your story I'm glad I chose this one, because you broke my heart into tiny slivers for the second scene.

This is a great missing scene. First of all, you've perfectly captured their typical bantering. But it was pretty clear the emotion in the words too. The sense of humor is spot on (LOL at fitting Downton in that narrow bed) and I so adore the last line. :)

As for the interaction, I think it speaks volumes even more than the words. There's such a sense of intimacy there, mainly in the simple gestures like her stroking his hair or kissing his head or his embrace. I also like the fact they both admit they are scared, even though for different reasons. It makes a lot of sense. And it's quite significant Charles admitted the Crawleys aren't his family. Quite a change when you think of the Pilot, but it is fitting, given the current situation.

I wanted to try something different here, a sense that they had an intimate relationship for a while and had reached the stage where it's comfortable while still capable of excitement, where they know each other's quirks and find comfort in that knowledge.

It really is a change from the start of S1 if Carson is seeing that the Crawleys (aside from Mary) are his employers, not his family, isn't it? Two moments in this episode made me realize that they certainly do not see him as family -- Edith's worry about her damn dress and a joke Robert made about Carson having to lower his standards. Shut up, man. At least Carson is trying, not like you, whining that people are only letting you play dress-up and are not letting you go off to play with the real guns. Two of your daughters are finding ways to make themselves useful. You could at least try dressing yourself instead of poking fun at your butler.

And you really managed to convey that so well.

You're absolutely right about their behaviour towards Carson. We have Mary on one side and, even if not as much evident, Sybil (she was ready to help and I don't think she did that only because she's a nurse now, she was visibly scared and ready to jump on her feet and it felt different from Isobel's very professional reaction). On the other, there's Edith, Robert and Violet (I really didn't like her comment to Richard, not at all, but that's Violet for you). Cora's in the middle. She seemed worried when it happened. Ultimately, it's just Mary who's family to him though. He must feel this too.

And again, I loved the reaction of Elsie to Mary here. That same pang of jealousy you put in your other fic, even though the situation is quite different. There's a general dislike towards her, sure, but it's something else too.

I really do have to try to get to the bottom of the Elsie/Charles/Mary triangle. It's more than just that Carson encourages Mary as though Mary's made none of her own bad luck. You and I have discussed, in comments to other stories, a little of why Elsie might have such antipathy towards Mary, but there's something here I'm not getting, yet.

just finished watching the epi

Fanfic lures another victim into its net.

This is the first time I'm writing fanfic for a show while it's still on the air, and I have to say it's very different.

Aww, I liked this. Too bad I don't have time for a new show at the moment. I'll have to check out the BBC radio show though -- I'm always looking for something to listen to while I clean and do busywork. :)

I applaud Speedy's piety, but do send our greetings and let him know we'll miss him. ;)

It's a UK show -- that means it's only like 7 episodes a series. At this point it would take you less than 9 hours to catch up.

The radio show went on for about 7 series, if I recall correctly, but it was only the pilot in which Phyllis Logan played the part, She was replaced by the time it was picked up.

You must watch the 1st series at least. 7 eppies! That's all! We need more Carson/Hughes shippers. I'm sure you will join me in that ship. *snort*
