Hum. I've read about installation files being missing from windows, which if you haven't reinstalled or upgraded windows recently is a bit of a stretch.
Best way to begin is going to be ruling out malicious rubbish. Use Hijack This (google for instructions) to check your system for any virus/worm/trojan badness.
Can't say as I'd recommend doing anything else until you rule out a software cause. You could google "memtest" and run that if you prefer, but personally I'd look to the code before the silicone.
Well we made sure our anti-virus software was fully up to date, and then ran a full and thorough check of the system, and then we downloaded and ran the Hijack thingamy. Since then the blue screen of death thing hasn't happened. Thanks for that. Any advice as to how to prevent it from happening again?

Do you know if you have system restore enabled and are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista?
