LJ idol week 23: the weak force

Sometimes we need something, even if we don't understand why we need it; we just know we do. And sometimes these things that we don't understand are delightful in their abstruseness.

The earth needs the sun. So do we. Even those of you who don't have seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which basically means melancholia ( Read more... )

Instead of thinking in beakers and chemical reactions and cells, now I think in behavior patterns and institutional racism and a spectrum of gender/sexualities. This is not a bad thing - it doesn't mean I'm dumber than I would've been had I continued with biology. It just means that my brain works differently now

I loved this part here. ♥

Thanks! Glad you liked it. It always bugs me when people imply that somehow people who aren't doctors or lawyers or whatever are less intelligent than those who are.

Oh my goodness, yes. I struggled with this for decades, basically since I was about ten years old, and it's only in more recent years that I've come to appreciate the many different forms that intelligence can take.

Well written :)

I think a lot of us have. I mean, society's insistence on status attainment is a big part of that (since status is connected to occupations like doctor, lawyer, etc), but I think it's also that "hard" sciences are just more highly valued. After all, who wants to be "soft"? ;)

"I think of science as rigid and unforgiving, with rules you cannot break, something that is ugly and un-lyrical in its' language. Except this isn't true."

Just beautiful - and I like how you contrast fear and awe. When teaching yoga, one of my favorite end-of-class chats is to talk about greeting the world with awe and wonder. And terrific closing line, too!

How's your aerial coming along? I'm heading up to Memphis this week to help a group of friends work on being a company - going to choreograph some group acts and also help them set some guidelines for working together. Should be fun!

Thank you! I was quite unhappy with this entry honestly, so it's good to know at least someone enjoyed it. :P

Silks are all right. I started taking class again and got my ass kicked the first week; we worked on different types of climbs, almost exclusively, which is not something I excel at (to put it nicely). But at least my strength is looking pretty good, minus my right wrist which I think is suffering from overuse. :( Wearing a brace most days lately. Yay to Memphis and choreography! I hope it goes well for you.

Yeah, not a huge climber either :) My favorite is what we call "pretty lady", some people call it knees climb or hocks climb, where you turn upside down, hook both knees over one of the fabrics, then sit up and grab above your legs, repeat. I find I can get so much more height on one climb with that one! Take it easy on your wrist :)

Ohhhhh I love that name! We call it sticky knee climb, which is also apt, but pretty lady climb sounds so much better.

This is lovely; I like the comparisons, and the contrast between a recognition of beauty and a fear of the unknown. :)
