Macross Frontier also feels a little like it's come off the rails, for no reason that I can really put my finger on.

Soul Eater is still good too, even if it is starting to head into shounen jump mode

Having read ahead in the manga and assuming they stick relatively closely to the manga plot (which they have so far) it's not going to be that bad. I think the longest fight has been about five chapter and it was interspersed with a lot of other stuff as well so...

They do seem to be trying to outdo themselves every week don't they.

Well, I think that's been a given for a few weeks now. I don't think that's the cause of this feeling. Maybe I've just been reading too much of derailedbydarry.com
