Just watched BirdBox on Netflix

I really enjoyed it actually! I was surprised at how many changes they made from the book though, for some reason I had it in my head that it was going to be a pretty close retelling of it. One thing that stood out to me was I remember (although disclaimer that it has been a few years since I read it now!)( Read more... )

netflix, daredevil, films, books

a big launch for expanding Hulu internationally
I haven't even thought about that with Disney+ also coming this year, but it makes sense.

I'm not surprised at all that both shows are canceled, but I really thought they'd wait until JJ is out, stringing fans along. Maybe Netflix just didn't care anymore...

I would also think that it would be great publicity for Disney’s new streaming service, just imagine the number of grateful fans saying that they have a loyal subscriber in them in that case, but apparently Disney want to keep all of that content family friendly, so it seems like the next best guess is Hulu? They don’t have *that much* original content yet, I get the impression that most people subscribe more for access to all of the network shows, and in the past they’ve said that one reason for waiting on expanding internationally is that they wouldn’t really have enough content. Here in the U.K. for example a lot of the content that you find on Hulu in America has already been licensed to Sky or to Amazon Prime. So it would seem like a total gift to have 5 new shows with already build-in fanbases that they can then promote as exclusive to Hulu from now on, they could even bring back The Defenders as well ( ... )

I wonder if Disney+ will be rolled out internationally or if it's US only at the beginning. That's why I didn't even consider them expanding Hulu.

It's the same in Germany. For The Handmaid's Tale, you'd have to subscribe to MagentaTV which is not something I knew even existed until I saw promo posters for THT. And Netflix doesn't have the rights for House of Cards here because they sold them before expanding.

I agree that it would be smart to revive the shows on Hulu for international distribution.

I’m not sure about Disney+ actually, I’ve just heard that Hulu should be coming to more countries from this year, but it would make sense to me if Disney+ is also included in that as they would have plenty of content I imagine ( ... )

I can't say I'm surprised that they cancelled Jessica Jones and The Punisher.

Same, I think that everyone was expecting the entire lineup to be cancelled once they cancelled Daredevil :(

A lot of people think that all the "Marvel Cancellations" have something to do with Disney's new streaming service... I personally think it's getting out of hand with all these streaming services... I mean, soon you will need like 200 bucks a month just to be able to "see everything"... It makes it definitely harder for people to be able to watch everything they want legally...

I know what you mean, most people are definitely of the attitude that they’re happy with just Netflix, and maybe Amazon Prime and Hulu, but otherwise they will just go back to illegally d/l shows if they became harder to access ( ... )

I watched Birdbox back on New Year's Day, and really enjoyed it as well, especially John Malkovich. The only real annoyance for me was that I thought Sandra Bullock was too old to be playing the pregnant woman, but whatever, it's Hollywood, I get it. However, I never read the book and had no idea that they had made all those changes! That's all very interesting, but I think I might like what they did in the movie better? Especially the ending with the blind people. Yikes. O_O (Even though people intentionally blinding themselves totally makes sense.)

I was kind of thrown by Sandra’s casting at first as well, from what I remember she was a young college student in the book actually. But it did end up working for me in the film, I just figured that she was meant to be in her early 40’s and playing younger than her real age, and ultimately it is nice to see it the other way around for once with a female character actually being aged up and having a romance with a much younger man ( ... )
