No Marking Hell this week, but several term class meetings after teaching so I didn't get back to home before 8 pm at best. I still managed to go to the movies on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, and saw Triple 9 and Room. I also managed to binge watch the second season of Bosch, watch the first two episodes of Peaky Blinders ' second season on ( Read more... )

Those sound like long and tiring days. I'm glad you found time to relax too!

They were.

Watching my tv shows on the computer is a sort of a solitary pleasure, so it's good to go and see movies at the cinema with my friends, even though we didn't really have time to have a drink before or after.

I'm just out from having seen Triple 9 and I'm mostly disappointed because most of the plot points hinge on two major inconsistencies (why kill that guy and how did Vassily get a phone?).

I don't think that the plot is the film's strongest suit but I don't see those as inconsistencies at all.

I'm afraid that getting a phone in prison is actually rather common, especially in a corrupted system like the Russian one.

As for that guy, well he was a rookie, and the nephew of the cop in charge of the heist investigation so he was the best target for a 999. Woody Harrelson's character dropped everything to drive (like crazy) to the crime scene.

It's Gabe that screwed everything up...without him, their plan would have worked.

I was thinking of Gabe's brother. If he hadn't been killed, then Gabe wouldn't have gone off the deep end.

Ahh, well from Irina's point of view, I guess she didn't expect the consequences concerning Gabe. Remember that she didn't know Mike's team! She even asked about being introduced to them eventually and said she had guessed they were cops.

All she knew was that Gabe's brother (can't remember his name) was Mike's best friend from his army time. He even knew about the son Mike had with Elena.

So killing that guy was a message/threat, for Mike was reluctant to do the new job. And it kinda worked since Mike and the others accepted to do it afterwards...

So can I skip s1 of BOSCH and just watch s2?

By the way, I just found out yesterday that Rhys and Russell are now a couple, and they've had or are about to have a child together! Her pregnancy had to be covered up in the 2nd half of the season with various coats, laundry baskets, and CGI, according to an interview with the showrunners I heard. I suspect you've known this already, did you?

Loved the episode. And I think I agree about Wright. She's certainly had marvelous stuff to play.

I wonder who Nina's husband will turn out to be?

It depends whether you're familiar with the novels' characters or not. If not, you may need to watch season 1 still...

For some reason, I don't think you're a reader of hard-boiled crime novels. :- )

Yeah I knew about Russel and Rhys being a couple, and about her pregnancy. They have been together for a while now. I believe they quickly hooked up and she officially left her husband by the end of season 2...

I think Nina mentioned a husband last year when talking to her cellmate. I doubt he's someone we already know. Anyway, it shows that Nina always mixes truth with lies when playing someone.

I remember when she mentioned the husband to the Dutch woman in jail, but we didn't know then if it was a lie, and I guess I mostly assumed it was a lie.

I do sometimes read crime fiction; last summer I read all of the Lew Archer LA noir novels. I have to be in that kind of mood, and find the right kind of writer. Who wrote the Bosch series?

With Nina, you never know whether she's genuine or not!

Michael Connelly wrote the Bosch series. The first 10 ones, written in the 1990's and early 2000's are really good (especially The concrete blonde and The last coyote), the latest...not so much.
