I absolutely covet Rosetta Stone's language learning software. I've heard it's by far the most effective way to learn to speak another language. I decided to look into their French CDs as I used to love French and have gotten reeeally rusty in it since I haven't taken any courses in years. I looked up Rosetta Stone and it's $500 for 3 CDs and books ( Read more... )

You just totally gave me an idea. I'm so ashamed that I didn't think about this, in my nerdiness. Torrents! :D

I have been using Byki 4 Express, a downloadable free program, to learn some Polish. If I paid some money (less than $500, but I don't remember how much) I could upgrade and access more lists and things. I know it has quite a few languages on its system, I would presume French is one of them.

How do you find the learning approach? Is it working?

Thanks! I'll check it out!

Well I haven't done it in ages to be fair, but the number of words and phrases I can say has definitely markedly increased and its also helped me understand how various letters are pronounced in Polish which has helped the process. Admittedly I'm not going to be fluent thanks only to this program but I've found it helpful.

I work with a Polish guy and one day he gave me a lift home so I thanked him in Polish and he was impressed with my pronunciation and said I had it spot on which I was really pleased about, you can listen to phrases as many times as you like so I do, over and over, till I get it as right as I can. They make me write words in Polish too so in theory I am learning all parts of the language which is useful. They also make you refresh your 'stale words', words you haven't gone over in a while, which keeps you up to date with everything you know. I should use it again really, I was enjoying myself!

I've been eyeing this product for a while too. Hoping to find a used copy for less.
