[ Ilsa sips, and is pleasantly surprised. Others won't be. ]

Hon, how much sugar did you put in the lemonade?

It's okay, I tend to like lemon juice. but a lot of people like a little bit of sugar in their lemonade.

[ She looks at the pitcher ]

You can probably just put one cup of sugar in, for the size pitcher you have here.

Really? Do you think people will like it better if I do?

Not everyone likes lemonade as sour as I like it. Would you like some help with it?

I'll be okay. I just have to put sugar in it, right? And do everything else the same?

That's it - My dad's way of doing it was for every quart of water, you add a half-cup of sugar, and a half-cup of lemon juice.

This pitcher is a two quart pitcher. Have you learned how to measure things in school, yet?

Umm.... not really.

I'll be in third grade this year though. Maybe they'll teach it then.

[ Ilsa fishes about in her purse for her notebook and pencil. Jotting down the notation for 1/2, she shows it to Mindy. ]

That's the symbol for 1/2, in case they haven't covered fractions yet. This will be somewhere on the measuring cup. Just fill the measuring cup level with the top, and that is one-half cup of sugar. They are different from the teacups or coffee cups in the house.

Oh, okay!

[That sounds super easy.]

Is it the same way when you make cookies and stuff like that?

Yep! You have to work up to that, though. Cookies are something that are more fun to make with someone, anyway.

[Have a sad sort of smile.]

When Mommy was still here, we used to make cookies together....

Well, perhaps the next time it gets cool enough to bake, should I call you when I'm baking cookies?

[There is a long silence, then a slight smile and she nods.]

I'd really like that...
