I like a clean break. Kind and understanding contact for a brief period after the breakup to make them feel that they have been listened to, with a steely willed resistance against letting them provoke you emotionally in any way, then no contact whatsoever. I would change passwords instantly, and defriend/decontact/ soonish, to prevent any ugliness that may make me regret having been kind.
