Shure SM 58

Im not a mic guru either but Id definately go with a Shure SM57 they are a great all purpose mic.

Animating gifs... macromedia fireworks is ok but has a learning curve, flash can export animated gifs too... id go with flash personally its very straight forward, but then again im a macromedianerd so...

I second the SM57. I've got one and the thing is great. Rugged, good sound quality, and you can use it to mic pretty much anything with good results.

though, seriously, I have made note of a number of places around town that there are sounds that I thought would be incredible if sampled and incorporated into music. If you get a mic going, bring it next time you're in town and we can go on a cool-noise-scavenger-hunt
