May 18, 2011 16:02

I've been going on and on about how I really want to write a book (which is inspired by the juicy ~twitter drama~ that I'm so vocal about) for months now ( Read more... )

Theres no tips, or tricks Ray. The only way to start is to ACTUALLY START.

Sit down, block of time, and get working.

If you need tips and tricks to undistract yourself, or focus yourself, then you're not ready to write.

You already know what you need to do. Just flippin do it.

I understand where you're coming from but I already know how to open up Word and start going to town on my keyboard.
Basically, in order for me to write anything, I need to know exactly how I'm going to phrase and articulate it. That's just the way my brain work. That usually comes easily for me, but in this case, it doesn't and that's what is frustrating me.
I'm too much of a perfectionist to write out whatever comes to mind and have it come out shitty even on my first draft.

I'm just full of surprises, aren't I?
Gosh, isn't it crazy how all people aren't wired the exact same way and may need to employ different strategies to approach certain tasks?

Writing is like any exercise. You have to start by warming up. At least that's what my teachers have always told me. Even if you can't start on your story, start with a small exercise. Do a stream of thought; that's always been my favorite exercise. That's basically just when you start writing whatever the hell comes out of your brain and you just go with it. Let it flow. You'd be surprised at some awesome things that come out of it, even if most of it is just gibberish. You can look up prompts too. Write something real short from your prompts. I've found that online prompts are kind of crappy, though. I have prompts from this class I took on creative writing. I would look for some at the library, if I were you! :) Just basic books about creative writing ( ... )

OMG this is actually really helpful. I never thought of "warming up" but I'll definitely have to give it a try.

Awesome, so glad it's helpful! Hey, if you ever need a prompt, like if you can't find any good ones, you can always ask me! My book has some pretty good ones.

Oh, and another thing that always helps, of course, is do plenty of reading. Reading inspires me and gives me new ideas. Look at their style and what works. And I've found just the simple act of reading motivates me, puts my brain into writing mode. It's like you soak in all the words, ya know?
