A geisha is neither, actually; They were raised as children to provide company, not sex, to the nobility. But usually there was sex anyways.

They were educated to provide better conversation, and trained in dancing, singing, etc to entertain men.

Sometimes a geisha from one of the more shifty clans would have to kill someone. Being women, they could get in very useful positions to do it.
