I can blend alright as long as I stay away from hip hop. Beat matching is beyond me.

I pick songs with outros and intros that have a similar quality but don't have distinctive drumming. Like it's okay if one song does, but I make sure the song I match up to doesn't have a distinctive drum beat. The problem is, I don't have a mixer at home, so when I have worked out sets before, I load up the cd changer and skip between songs. There's always this pause which makes it really hard to figure out if the beats match, because I can't hear them playing at the same time, nor can I mess with tempo and speed and such.

In order to compensate, I avoid songs that are really beat-centric (like hip hop) and I concentrate on thematic moods or playing songs that use a similar instrument (like a string of songs with organ riffs, or with flute intros, or something like that). I would love to have a mixer at home, but being pretty broke I don't see that happening anytime soon.
