My mother and I just had a discussion about this on the phone like 5 minutes ago.
She said every big city has a zoo, which is true.
And I said everybody from Detroit has been to/loves the zoo and therefore it would be insane to close it (besides, an abandoned zoo would be creepy).
If they do close, I'm sure much, much hate will be dished to the city of detroit. But what do they care? They can let the city go to shit again now that the Super Bowl is over.
Agreed. I am appalled that I thought the Superbowl being here would be such a great boost for the city and I was so happy about it, and then something like this happens. It's a damn shame.
I have faith that the zoo will be saved. I've been following the story and it is a damn shame. I think the rest of the cities in Michigan should take over the zoo and change the name from The Detroit Zoo to The Zoo of the Cities and Municipalities of Michigan except for Detroit.
In all seriousness I would hope that if the city doesn't change its mind private donars will step up. I think seeing GM or Ford on the water tower would be a lot better than having no zoo at all. The Toledo Zoo faced a similar crisis in the early 80s and it recovered.
Thank you Steve. That actually makes me feel alot better. I completely agree with everything you just said. I really hope that when I go to the zoo in March, it won't be for the last time.
I feel really strongly about this as well. I'm not even a huge fan of the zoo, I only like to go once in a while. I do, however, realize that it serves an important service in the community.
