“What’s Wrong Hyukkie?”

(1st Inkling)

It was late at night and there was no one left in the practice room but Donghae and Hyukjae.

‘How did this happen?’ thought Hyukjae as he glanced at the beautiful boy next to him, he quickly scooted over so that there would be more space in between them.

‘This is bad’ thought Hyukjae, ever since last week he had been avoiding Donghae and now they were the only ones left, all alone, at night; ‘When most bad things happen, scary things’ he said stealing another glance at his friend.

‘Big Mistake’ he thought as Donghae caught him looking, The younger boy was now moving closer to Hyukjae, with what he thought was a very serious expression, it sacred Hyukjae. ‘Why does he keep staring at me like that?’

Donghae laid in bed wide awake bothered by what had happened earlier that day. He and Hyukkie had decided to meet up to get a bite to eat before they headed to the office together. They were chatting, enjoying each other’s company, on the street, walking to their agreed restaurant when Hyukjae suddenly stopped walking.

He lost all expression in his face, he just stood there staring, frozen to that one piece of sidewalk. At first Donghae waited for Hyukkie to move, thinking he was just playing around but when a few more seconds passed he went over to his friend. He called out to his friend and still he didn’t move, he tried getting his attention, but all of it was fruitless, Hyukjae continued to stare off at who knows what. Donghae started to get very worried and anxious, he didn’t know what to do, he looked at his friend and saw that there were tears forming in his eyes.

“Hyukkie, Hyukkie, what’s wrong” Donghae pleaded almost in tears himself, while he shook the statues arm. “Hyuk…please,” he whispered, feeling his throat closing and his own tears on the brim of his eyes.

After a few moments Hyukjae suddenly moved again, like summer had come and melted the ice that incased him, and he was now free to move about. After a quick, rub of his eyes and sigh, Hyukjae started walking again, as if nothing had happened.

“Hyukkie, Hyukkie…” said Donghae said both relieved, that nothing, physical anyway, seemed to be wrong with his friend, but he was also frustrated Hyukkie was passing off whatever had happened to him.  He was a little mad that his friend was confining whatever made him have such a strong reaction.

“Hyukkie, are you ok? Did something happen?” he asked walking faster to try to keep up with the dancer who suddenly started picking up speed.

“No, I’m fine, the restaurants not that far away, common I’m hungry” said Hyukjae picking up even more speed, wanting to get off the street quickly.

“Hyuk!” yelled Donghae in frustration. “I know something’s up, why did you suddenly become a statue back there?” he asked almost jogging to catch up with Hyukkie.

“I don’t want to talk about it” he said moving through the crowd of people on the street.

“Hyukkie, what’s wrong? You know you can tell me anything, hmm” said Donghae giving one of his cute expressions that Hyukkie always commented on, but it was useless Hyukjae couldn’t see it, he was a good few feet away.

“Did you maybe see a alien, or a ghost, or some thing else, someone maybe?”

“What part of I don’t want to talk about it do you not understand?” he huffed.

Hyukkie was getting angrier, Donghae thought he must have hit a cord, it must be something he said. “But Hyukkie you saw something or someone th-“, he didn’t get to finish his sentence, Hyukjae suddenly stopped his furious pace and looked at Donghae.

“I. Said, I. Don’t. Want. To. Talk. About. It. Drop it already!”  He yelled, tears still visible in his eyes as well as pain. Donghae was taken a back, not by Hyukkie’s yells but at the anguish he saw his friend was in.

‘That’s three’ thought Donghae, he knew Hyukjae well enough now to know that once he said something three times that he meant it, period.  So he dropped the subject, hoping that eventually Hyukkie would come to him when he was ready. They continued to walk; they skipped getting something to eat and headed straight for the office, in silence. It stayed that way for the rest of practice and even on their way home.

Donghae grunted in frustration of not knowing, it really bothered him not knowing anything and having Hyukkie avoiding him. He sat up trying to think of what could have triggered a happy-go-lucky Hyukkie into a frozen, snappy one. He wondered what he saw and why he couldn’t tell Donghae about it. ‘Why?’ thought Donghae as he tried to get some sleep.

The next day wasn’t any better Hyuk still avoided him, Donghae tried to approach him several times but each time he did Hyukjae would run off or start a conversation with someone near by.  Desperate for some answers Donghae decided to ask the only person he thought might know what was going on with Hyukkie.  So he decided to look for Junsu after he finished getting the routine they were taught that day.

Hyukjae saw Donghae looking at him again and knew that he would try and talk to him again, which was on his things I’d rather do than admit I’m Junsu’s slave list. ‘Junsu’, thought Hyukkie, and he went off to go find his best friend.

He found Junsu quickly; he was alone in one of the music rooms, practicing.  He waited quietly as his best friend finished the song he was currently singing. Junsu must have heard him enter the room because as soon as he finished he turned around and looked at him.

“Hyukjae, what’s up” said Junsu and then quickly continued, “What’s wrong?” as he finished he got up and swiftly gave his friend a hug. Hyukjae was first surprised but quickly embraced his best friend tightly, he melted into his arms and felt instantly better. “What’s wrong?” he asked again into Hyukjae’s shoulder, as he started moving his hands up and down Hyukjae’s back, trying to soothe him.

‘Leave it to Junsu, to know right away, even before I say anything’s wrong’ he thought as he tired not to let out a sob. Finally after another minute the boys let go of each other.

“What’s wrong Hyukkie?”  He asked the dancer as they both sat down on the floor.

“I.. I saw her, yesterday” said Hyukjae, staring at his feet.

“Who?” asked Junsu. At this Hyukjae looked up at his friend and Junsu instantly knew to whom he was referring to. Junsu quickly embraced his friend again, “When, where, how, Hyukkie?” asked Junsu after he let go of his friend.

“Yesterday, I saw her on the street… when I was with Donghae…” he said.

“Donghae was with you! What did you do? Did you talk to her?” asked Junsu not surprised that she would turn up all of sudden and when he was with Donghae. ‘Just when Hyuk was recovering, when he could find happiness, she comes back, I hate that woman’, thought Junsu.

“I couldn’t do anything; I saw her and just froze up. I just stood there and watched her, she was shopping with a…”

“With another guy?” asked Junsu, Hyukjae nodded. “Did she see you?”

“I, I think so… I can’t be to sure, I saw she looked my way and I started walking as fast as I could out of there.” he admitted, feeling ashamed telling Junsu.

“And Donghae, what did you tell him?” he asked hoping his friend hadn’t done something stupid as to push away someone who was obviously very important to him, even if his friend didn’t realize it.

“Nothing”

“Nothing?”

“Yea, I sort of yelled at him and told him that I didn’t want to talk about it and I haven’t talked to talked to him since…I’ve been avoiding him” he said sheepishly not wanting to look up.

“Hyukjae!” yelled Junsu. “Why would you do that, he’s probably worried sick about you,”

“I know that” he said playing with the zipper on his sweater.

“You two have gotten along really well, becoming really good friends, why not tell him about Soo-“

“Junsu-ay! Don’t ok” he yelled out.

“Sorry Hyukjae” he apologized for his almost slip up. “Well why don’t you just tell him about her”

“I can’t do that”

“Why?”

“I don’t know… I just can’t. Besides we promised never to talk about it again. So you better not say anything, I mean it Junsu” said Hyukjae as he glared at his best friend.

“I know, I won’t say anything”, said Junsu.  “Even though you’re making a big mistake, you can’t move on until you deal with it now” he mumbled out quickly.

“What?”Asked Hyukjae irritated.

“You heard me, Hyuk, staying quite; not talking about it is only hurting you. Only making it harder so that when you do meet someone you may really love you won’t be able to.”

“That’s where your wrong Junsu,” he said as he got to his feet and walked to the door, “Cuz I don’t plan on loving anyone, ever again” said Hyukjae and he quietly walked out of the music room.

“Hyuk” called Junsu quietly as he left.

To be continued…
