Headlock

A sledgehammer? Sometimes you just can't pick a lock. Sometimes you just have to bust it into pieces.

Does it ever strike you odd that you talk in alot of metaphors? I know I have noticed that about myself and was a bit curious as to the reason...

It doesn't strike me as odd anymore. I've been writing and talking in extended metaphors for at least 15 years. I can't say why you do it, but I think I've got a pretty good handle on why I like to.

The upside to using extended metaphors or analogies is that if you pick the right one it can give much greater insight into a situation then a plain description. The downside is that if the analogy doesn't ring true for the listener then that particular attempt to communicate is futile. I go for the greater understanding whenever I can. I figure if I'm being too obtuse than I can always revert back to the simple description. That assumes the listener still cares what I have to say after babbling incoherently, but that is a risk I am willing to take.

I enjoy how both of you appreciate and use well the fluidity and effectuality of poetic prose. The richness and vivid illustration of such expression is something to savor.

And, according to Aristotle,"... it is also a sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an intuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars."
