Quick Question

Nov 11, 2004 10:21

So I'm talking with a coworker the other day about mp3 playing apps, and we just couldn't fathom why anyone would use winamp over iTunes. I mean, I understand personal preference and all that, but when the features in one program are so much more than the other, why not switch? Please enlighten ( Read more... )

Well, a lot of my tunes are in AAC format, which is fine if you use iTunes, but not so fine if you use another music player. Here's a list of all my music If there's anything you want immediatly, just let me know, they'll be uploaded to my server, and I'll send you a link. :-)

BTW, forgot to mention that the songs in AAC can converted to mp3 for ya if you like. :-)

Is iTunes free?

Is it smaller than WinAMP?

I've never tried it, so I dunno.

It's free. I doubt it's smaller than WinAMP, but it only consumes 7% of my CPU (which doesn't interfere with my graphics work). Plus, you can rip music in to it in 5 different VERY customizable formats. Some people have complained that they don't like iTunes organizing their music collection, which is understandable, but one can turn off that feature.

I don't use either. I think a lot can be accounted for in people liking to stick to what they are accustomed to, especially if they aren't really computer people.

I would also point out that the more you push someone the more obstinate they get, I've had someone try to bully me out of my choice of player on more than one occasion and honestly the more I am bullied the more entrenched I become.

I'll look into switching to something different when my player no longer suits my needs. And then I'll probably compare several and see which one I personally like best.

Don't worry, I do want a mac someday - It will keep my PC's and my pipe-dream linux machine company. I'll probably use it as my audio machine when I get it. One of these days. When I have buckets of money.

I would never push something on to someone, but in saying that, I will be an advocate of what I believe to be a superior product, and encourage people to seek out the best app for their needs. I was just wondering why people chose WinAMP over iTunes. What do you use? What do you like/dislike about it?
So, when you have buckets of money will you buy me a suped-up Linux machine too? ;-)

I understand the difference - I'm talking about someone (not naiming names) who was trying to belittle me and make me feel stupid for my choice of player, just because he doesn't like it. You are just being enthusiastic about something you feel is teriffic ( ... )

I don't use either. Get ready to kill over, but Media Player is just fine for me. Sorry dude.

Hey, that's cool. Everyone has their own preference. If you don't mind me asking, what to you either like or dislike about it? When I give recommendations to PC friends, I just want to be able to offer them options that are tailored to their individual needs.

truthfully the reason I use Media Player is because it comes with windows all ready to run, and will update itself if not. Not to mention it is really easy to use and truthfully I dont use any of the advanced featured on a media player. I just want it to run my video or play my music. I might make up playlists and th most I'll do is make it play randomly on constant repeat. I think the only time I have ever needed to do something is when I downloaded the xvid codec so I could run Divx files on it.
Basically its really just because it's there and I am familiar with it. I also use quicktime and real player for the same reasons for streaming movies and audio. I'm just not that needfull of a program.

Very understandable. This is exactly the type of response I was hoping for. Everyone uses different apps for different reasons, and I just like to know why. Thanks!

I use both. I use Itunes because I have an Ipod and it's easy to auto update it an such. HOWEVER, when I am sitting at home and want to listen to my entire library in random order I use Winamp...I really hate the random feature on Itunes cause it's just not very random. a lot of the time I will get three or four songs from the same artist in a row, and winamp randomizes much better.

At least it doesn't play the same song anymore. :-) Have you tried the "Party Shuffle" feature yet? I like it cause it's random, but I do get the option of deciding the order of the random songs. Hmmm...Guess it takes away from the random aspect if I know what's coming up. :-P
