I know what you mean about things and places getting stale. I've been thinking about making a trip to Ikea soon to breathe some new life into my apartment. If only there were enough space to rearrange the furniture...
Even just a little item can go a long way. I bought a $40 nightstand from iKea a few weeks ago and a small lamp to go with it. Just a slight re-arrangement transformed the bedroom into something light and something I don't mind spending time in. The nightstand before that was an old, massive computer server.
Lighting is something that can also go a long ways too. I've found that warmer light fixtures produce a feeling of warmth that can go a long way in a single apartment.
I've got a verging-on-unhealthy addiction to clip-on lamps. You know, the bendable-neck aluminum ones that you can throw normal bulbs in? I clip them on the futon, bookcases, shelves--I actually have one clipped to my monitor stand. I love pointing them at walls to give indirect, dramatic lighting.
And then I just use overhead lights most of the time. (Also, let's be honest--why would you want a light source behind your monitor? It's a very pretty recipe for eyestrain.)
On this one you and I are about as different as night and day.. I can't stand overhead lights at all. I rarely use them unless I have a need for especially bright illumination.
The lights behind monitor thing I do all the time; I always figured that the monitor was a bright thing against a backdrop of something dark.. lights would mean my eyes would be adjusting back and forth less and I could look at it longer.
I admit I'm not the most frugal one, but here's my take on it - get yourself the new tv now, knowing that 1) now you can afford it, & 2) you can take a loan from your rainy-day & pay yourself back soon, & 3) if you get one of those "sabbaticals" again, you'll have an awesome new tv to watch!!

Also, you've had a boss give you a TV and another boss surprise you with Scotch at your desk. You must be great to work with!
