I would buy direct from apple -- they do have an education discount (sometimes it's a discount, sometimes it's a free ipod, etc.) The base is $1099, which is probably enough for what he's looking for. Our macbook is like 3ish years old, and we purchased the low end one, and it still works for most all of our needs (just can't game on it, but that'd be true with any mac!)

I love Macs, but I used to always run into software issues years ago, so I converted to PC. I know you work in programming so your view of Vista is probably different than mine, but I've had relatively few problems with it over the past year. The only longterm one is that I have to view my work email on Firefox and not IE due to Vista, but it's not a huge deal. I also think only having browser email has a lot to do with my work IT dpt. being a bit lazy.
