bad grammar rules

I just noticed that my notebook has grammar rules on the back cover. But some of the rules are wrong and some have bad grammar themselves. Examples:

In the punctuation section:
A semicolon indicates a greater pause than that which is indicated by a comma; and is often used between groups of words separated by commas ( Read more... )

Mostly your rule is correct, but effect can be a transitive verb. From the online Merriam-Webster dictionary:
>>1 : to cause to come into being
2 a : to bring about often by surmounting obstacles : ACCOMPLISH b : to put into operation

Actually, the rule about the semicolon that your notebook states is the exception specified in the link you gave. So the book is accurate, although I would hope they note the more common usage as well.

effect is a noun and affect is a verb

Actually, both are both nouns and verbs, as the link you provided even states. But again, you are giving the more common usage.

See, my reaction was that the use of a semicolon in the description was completely gratuitous and unnecessary.
