I am surprised that you never read Grapes of Wrath. Ulysses made a huge impression on me, but don't know if I would have the patience to read it for the first time now (my attention span isn't what it once was!).

I've read more the trashy books on the list than you have--that figures.

I developed a dislike for Steinbeck based on forced-feeding of his lesser tales in junior high school.

I can completely relate to that. I had a few good books ruined for me that way. It's a bit didactic too, but there were a few images in Grapes of Wrath that really stuck in my head. (Those famous Dorothea Lange photos could have served as illustrations. I read the book before I ever saw those.)

So what's not to like about The Red Pony?

To be fair, we did not deconstruct this in grade school. I read it when I was fairly young (about 10 years old): my first angsty novel!

Having checked out your list, oshun's and Rhapsy's, it's safe to say we have read many of the same books.

GA, that's a lot of great books on that list - how come you've only read the boring ones? j/k Steinbeck is definitely not my cup of tea, either.

I strongly recommend The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Watership Down, The Wasp Factory and *blushes* I really love A Town like Alice. There, I said it. Sooo embarassing ...

Don't be embarrassed. I read The Da Vinci Code and Bridget Jones' Diary and admitted it--but then I am shameless.

Oh you never read Blyton, or is that something of my generation that we all read her books (or devoured them)? I am curious as to the two stars behind Donna Tart :)

I think that was leftover from when she copied the list from me, I had footnoted it there.
