The Evil Black Box

We were not allowed to watch anything but Walter Cronkite when I was growing up, so I fear TV almost as much as I enjoy it.

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people who are writers or who work with books, blog about TV shows. Some writer/book types are very funny and witty on the topic (see Literaticat’s brilliant take on a reality show about the ( Read more... )

My list is pretty short: Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, and Medium--but my memory is good enough that can recognize a rerun within the first minute or two, and very few of them are worth sitting through twice.

I can remember watching Star Trek Next Generation and enjoying it a lot. That's been quite a while ago, though.

While growing up, I watched every telenovela (Latino soap opera) under the sun. My mom and I would sit and watch them together -- it was our thing.

Now, I'm totally hooked on Top Chef (which I am watching this very moment) and Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations because I am a total food nerd, Project Runway because I love fashion and Star Trek:TNG -- in reruns -- because I love Sci-Fi.

you know that for me, it's all about the wire. the only other things i watch are when we're at my parents', which include, yes, law and order, also various csi variants, cold case, and for the most comfort, just about anything on the home and garden network. except if it's too gardeny.

My friends say that the reason I love House is because my humor matches that of the character Gregory House. Now, I am not denying the fact that the retorts that sneak out of my mouth are of the sarcastic (sometimes caustic) nature, but I do like the show, not only for the dark humor, but also for the witty, multi-dimensional characters that are thrown together in high stress situations. With that said, I am more of a movie person who perfers the more intellectual movie over the big blockbusters. I recently had the pleasure of viewing The History Boys as part of my university's foreign film series and completely fell in love with the scintillating dialog and the lovely variation of original characters.

Yes, I did hear that The History Boys was fantastic (based on the British play, right?). And I LOVE House, although I don't think of it asa TV because because I watch it on DVD. I think House is comforting because it's smarter than regular TV (he's never not a jerk, you don't have to fear that he's going to be nice to Cameron or tell Cuddy she's a good person), it's consistent in the way comforting TV should be. Your comments are fun, and you are very kind to have spent time with Ellen and Leila. Thank you. It means more than you can imagine. PS I am a terrible blogger -- if you have any idea on how I might improve this skill do let me know! Hope school is going well.
