We do not have total absolute control over everything, but the truth is happiness is largely a choice. It's not as simple as that, but it's for the most part true. I can give you some book recommendations, some audio lectures, or we could have a lengthy discussion about this. The best summation though is, if you react to life, you will be frustrated and unhappy, if you are proactive in life and make things happen, you will be happier.
Tricky balance, because the dissatisfaction inherrent to society, and it would seem humanity, drives us to greater success, innovation, creation. But that same restlessness can go too far and turn into bad stress, depression and misery. So, you do have to decide for yourself when something is "enough" and you can be happy with it, or at least be satisfied with what you did accomplish, so that you can find happiness elsewhere. Dwellng is rarely helpful. As a painter said, "keep the brush moving.
Half the time when I see people dissatisfied, it's usually through an unwillingness to dig themselves out of the situation they're in, so I think your friend is right. I don't think we have 100% control, but like you said, an 80-85% control over whether we're happy or not. It's a matter of perspective also, and being able to look at things objectively rather than drowning in the emotions of the moment. You have so much going for you, I can't imagine you being unhappy! How's the bellydancing going?

Hey, Sweet Pea! :)
So great to hear from you! Yeah.. A couple of things have me a bit blue these days. I'm pretty sure that the main one that's really bothering me though is my job. It's not at all what I thought it would be and I'm more than just considering resigning. The students I have in my class only care about fighting and being nasty to each other and to me. It's really crappy. I barely feel like a teacher. I hate going back there every day. Sadly, I had to stop bellydancing on Sundays which killed me 'cause I love it so much and I simply adore Jeniviva! She's a friggin' RIOT. Very sweet girl and excellent teacher.
Good news is I just got a brand new, red little hottie of a car! I love it. It's so fun to drive and I get all giddy every time I look at it. ;o)
How's things with you going, doll? Your band? How was your Christmas?! I miss you, girl! Here's my cell: 516-851-0448. Send me yours!
