Right. That done I have a couple of things to say.

1. I really loved this film - its the film I've wanted to see since Empire. With one Cavet.

WHY DID THEY NEED ANOTHER DEATH STAR.

The film was more than standing on it's own up to the introduction of the super weapon. It wasn't even needed as a plot device to get Finn and Han to go to the First Order base as Finn was obviously going anywhere. Its a shame - because it really felt that it was added in unnecessarily.

2. Ray. I assume she is supposed to the the other half of a Jedi Twin set with Ben. Its seems pretty obvious any way especially with her final scene with Leia - leaving it hang seems another unnecessary plot thread which seems bizarre unless shes going to turn out to be Lukes daughter which would be ... insane.

I thought Rae was Luke's daughter....
I thought the movie was funny, well paced, and intelligent for Star Wars. But there were issues - the lads pointed out that it was more or less the same plot as the first movie. Once Han stepped on the 'high up walk way of death', he was a goner. Finn didn't have any character to speak to. Darth Billed Platypus was a weird ass baddie. And the darkside has been taken over by Golum.
But apart from that I liked it :-)

The Ray thing .. The thing is (as now I've seen it and gone digging) in early drafts of the scripts they made no secret that she was Han and Leia daughter and kept Ren's identity far less obvious - whereas here they seem to have gone the other way.

She *could* be Lukes daughter - though given the Jedi code thing I don't think its that likely - Plus Leia's ring seemed to have some significance in the Hug - and also it makes that final hug have more significance.

Eitherway it seems odd to have left it hanging ...

IMHO, The introduction of the superweapon was an excuse to get the Resistance proper involved in a big battle- if they just need to rescue Rey, then there's no reason for it to be a big setpiece rather than Han, Finn, and Chewie sneaking in and out.

(Yes, they definitely could have found better ways to do this than a generic Death Star But Bigger-style superweapon, I'm just saying)

Not happy... anonymous December 18 2015, 16:08:58 UTC
Where do I start.... "seems like ive been here before"
Lets blow up the super death star and save the day....mmmm
Obviously Han being turned into a kebab by his own son was hard to watch...there wasn't a dry eye in the cinema....well ok mine weren't....
I thought the handling of Chewy on his return to whatever the planet was called was poor/disappointing/sad...
Leia standing there waiting for our heroes return and she gives Rey (whos only been around for five minutes ) a big cuddle and not the big furry fella.... not an "oh Chewy" or anything ....
Dont get me started on Captain Phallus...
Are we expected to believe a Shadow trooper/elite storm trooper would give up that easy???
Just a few thoughts I have more....for later.
I.M.

The Deathstar thing I completely agree with. It was completely there as a backup in case people hated the new storyline/plot.

The hug between Ray and Leia thing - that's one of the Yes you really are my daughter bits as far as I am concerned - otherwise as you say that made no sense. In that context it works. And yes not a dry eye at Han's fate - even though it was clear even He knew what was about to happen.

I suspect we haven't seen the last of our Chrome plate female storm trooper captain.

This is very much a first chapter (hence the cliff hanger) - Hopefully now we have got the Death Star out of JJ's system he will have faith to go with the new cast and new direction - which I thought was doing just fine long before the star killers reveal.

Overall much much more to like than dislike but yet another deathstar knocks a chunk of marks off.

Yes I thought that Rae could be Han and Leia's daughter ...with a very outside chance she's Luke's daughter...
I still can't get out of my head the lack of emotion between Chewy and Leia on their return...just doesn't sit right with me at all... its little details like that ruin it for me...
My brother doesn't want to see it again because of the rehash.... I think I need to as i'm 50/50 about it at the moment..

I think it makes as much sense for Leia to hug her niece as her daughter, so Rey could still be either.

And they HAVE to stop designing super weapons with useful trenches big enough to fly space ships into because that NEVER ENDS WELL!

The New New Death Star (although I see what they did there with Starkiller) was stupid, yet utterly typical of an autocratic regime - Our plan failed twice, so what do we do? The same thing, but EVEN BIGGER. Nobody was in a position to point out how stupid it was ( ... )

The echoing of incidents from earlier films seems in keeping with the rest of the series (especially if you take the ring structure view), so that didn't bother.

The new superweapon is exactly what a fascistic regime would do (as Misha says) - stupidly big and very destructive (it took out more targets than both Death Stars together!), something which could wipe out their opposition.

Re: Leia hugging Ray - I wouldn't read too much into that. She was clearly grief stricken (she had found someone like a father figure, now he was gone), Leia would be able to see how much (the Force is strong with both of them) and why should she not respond to that? Chewie seemed to go straight into very Wookie anger, rage even, and may still have been like that - he wasn't walking as though he needed a hug. :-)
