It's easy and it's seductive to be consumed by bitterness. I know that firsthand, too.

So far, I'm only capable of thinking that when I'm not caustically myopic Which, irritatingly, is when I don't need to be reminded.

You once said to me something to the effect that it's a great injustice that it's always the best and the brightest who get mired down in self-loathing.

I did, and I still cling to the notion despite my knowing it's absolute bollocks. Misery is not restricted to the genius club; statistically it's not even endemic there.

Still.

To some extent, I think at least a little self-doubt is *crucial*. Without it, it's easy to end up as a dipshit president or douchebag corporate lawyer. But we also need perspective in that. I *need* people to tell me that I'm not my father, and that the balance of my virtues and vices is largely in my favor - because otherwise I wouldn't know. Assholes and sociopaths don't usually know (or care) that they're assholes or sociopaths.
