I just joined the Pacific Masters and US Masters swimming organizations. Not because I swim well, but in preparation for registering for an open water swim organized by the Sierra Nevada Masters. These people must all think highly of themselves, or must be very dommy.

Living in 2 locations can be a pain in the butt, especially if you cook your own meals. I'm leaving Tahoe for LA today, and I need to finish up or pack all my perishables. Transporting the perishables seems to cut down their lifespan a lot, so I prefer to use up as much as possible ( Read more... )

I made Rösti for lunch today, using boiled, russet potatoes. It came out about as good as I expected for a first try, but it sure wouldn't pass a Swiss taste test. I have a bitchy, middle-class question. Why do some health care services cost more if one has insurance than if one does not? I.e., there is an advertised price for a service but if you happen to have health insurance, then the price is much higher (on the order of 3x higher). One of the physical disks in a logical volume "forgot" its UUID at some point today. The thing has been running great for 4 months and now I get some weird error.
